# Voting Under Siege: The Dark Irony of Europe Financing Elections While Amhara Burns

In June 1, 2026, Ethiopia will hold its general election. Official press releases out of Addis Ababa and sanitized bureaucratic briefs in Brussels spin a familiar narrative about registered voters and democratic milestones. The reality on the ground tells a much darker story. It is a performative exercise carried out under the shadow of an active human tragedy.

Right now, the Amhara region is being systematically torn apart. This is an active, state-led campaign of devastation. For the past 8 years, communities across Amhara have endured a terrifying reality of continuous federal military operations, severe communication blackouts designed to conceal the truth, and relentless drone strikes that shatter homes, markets, and civilian lives.

To speak of a "free and fair election" while families are fleeing mass displacement and facing acute starvation is a cruel distortion of reality. A population cannot cast a ballot when running for survival from heavy artillery.

What makes this violence particularly egregious is that it is being artificially sustained by external lifelines. Just last month, the European Union made the unconscionable decision to hand €140 million in direct, unconditional budget support straight to the Ethiopian central treasury.

This decision functions as a direct subsidy of warfare. When Brussels steps in to absorb the state's domestic administrative debts, it creates immediate fiscal breathing room. Local revenues are effectively freed up, allowing the regime to divert its own resources into fueling the military apparatus, purchasing more drones, and funding the very logistics of aggression currently laying waste to the Amhara region.

Furthermore, this European taxpayer money is building the structural scaffolding needed to stage next week's voting spectacle. By funding the state administration while an entire region is under military siege, opposition voices are jailed or exiled, and independent journalists are systematically suppressed, the EU is purchasing an illusion of legitimacy for a repressive government.

International aid is supposed to preserve human life, not finance its destruction. If the European Union truly adheres to the humanitarian principles it so loudly champions, it must immediately halt all direct treasury transfers to the Ethiopian state. Funding must be completely stripped away from the government apparatus and redirected through independent humanitarian channels to save the lives actually being shattered in Amhara.

A violent, superficial PR campaign must not be allowed to hide the blood on the ballot. The global community must stand firm and echo the harsh reality on the ground: **No ballots while bullets fly.**
